A Filipina domestic helper was sentenced to 24 weeks of imprisonment after she took assorted jewelry from her employer amounting to $79,000.
Rubelyn Nisperos, a 33-year-old domestic helper in Hong Kong, asked for leniency but Magistrate Winnie Lau only gave her the standard discount of 1/3 for pleading guilty of the said offense.
The OFW went to HK in 2016 to work as a domestic helper for her family in the Philippines. She is close to her employer, the reason why she asked leniency over her offense.
Though the magistrate considered the plea of the employer, it is evident that theft is a serious breach of trust especially as it was done inside the house of the employer.
Nisperos is married in the Philippines. She has a 13-year old daughter. According to her, she took the jewelry because she needed money for the medication of her parents in the Philippines. Nisperosimmediately admitted to the crime after her employer confronted her. She was arrested on Feb 2 and was imprisoned without bail ever since.
This is already the second case of Filipina getting involved in theft incidents within the last 5 days. Last April 15, OFW Sheila Grace Laidan was sentenced to 6 months jail for stealing $90,000 worth of jewelry from her employer.
