An Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in Saudi Arabia will be facing detention for charges of immorality and infanticide due to the dea th of her own newborn baby.
According to Kaagapay ng Bawat OFW Advocates, the NGO organization that’s helping Filipino expats, a certain Lorna (not her real name) was impregnated after a ra pe inci dent. Because of fear, she refused to confess her condition to her Saudi employers not until last month that she gave birth.
This was confirmed by Gerwin Sundungan, a member of Kaagapay Ng Bawat OFW Advocates, and said that the secret was only revealed to her employers who are living in Albaha, Western Region of Saudi Arabia after she gave birth last month.
Sundungan already asked the assistance of the Philippine foreign officials.
Head of the Assistance to Nationals (ATN) of the Philippine Consulate in Jeddah Vice Consul Lemuel Lopez already visited Lorna in her detention cell and according to her, she was rap ed by a foreign expatriate who works as an on-call driver of her employer. In fear of making them mad, she kept the pregnancy until last month.
On the time of her delivery, her female employer saw Lorna inside the room prompting her to call her children. As the female employer returned, she found the baby wrapped in malong and already inside a plastic bag. They were still able to rush the baby to the hospital but the baby died en route.
“Nung isinusugod na ng amo ang bata sa ospital doon na binawian ng buhay, hindi na umabot ang bata sa ospital” says Lopez.
Lopez also said that Lorna was initially charged with imm orality and infan ticide. However, if she was found guilty, a dea th sentence will be imposed on her.
“Mukhang post partum yun yung pwedeng one reason kung bakit nagawa nya yun. ‘Pag na-prove na post partum depression most probably she will not be charged.”
