Hong Kong court finds a Filipino domestic helper guilty of kicking a 7-year-old ward.
The Filipina was identified as Geraldine V.O, who pleaded guilty to common assault in front of Eastern Principal Magistrate Peter Law on March 11.
Geraldine went to Hong Kong last November 2018 and worked with her employers just for three months. It is said that she got angry with one of her wards and kicked the child.
According to reports, the incident took place last Feb. 22 in which Geraldine allegedly kicked the boy by the stomach following a fight. The boy was rushed to the hospital and the Filipina domestic helper was arrested by the police.
“She had a dispute with the kid. According to the defendant, the young boy had also scratched and kicked her on more than one occasion,” says the lawyer of Geraldine.
“She is deeply remorseful for what happened. And now she has a criminal record, which may affect any future plan to work again here in Hong Kong,” the lawyer added.
Leniency was also asked by her lawyer to Judge Law because the defendant “did not use excessive force” as the boy was instantly released from the hospital and given a clean bill of health.
However, Judge Law considered the very young age of the child and the inability to defend himself from such violence.
“Yours is a breach of trust case,” said Judge Law. “[The victim] was only 7 and a child at this age could hardly protect himself from facing violence, even if not a very forceful one,” he added.
