Overseas Filipino Workers must be well-aware of the latest scam that victimizes and extort money from them.
Always be careful from illegal recruiters claiming that it is faster to work abroad through direct hire rather than going through an agency. They will promise to give you work visa once you step foot abroad and full registration to POLO and Philippine Embassy will later follow.
This is totally illegal for these reasons:
- If you don’t have an agency in the Philippines, POEA will have no holds on you in case you get treated badly by your employer abroad. No one will negotiate between your employer and POLO to send you home.
- In case you know someone, be it a relative or a friend, that will help you abroad, it will be much better. But it is advisable for the employer to send you to POLO and let you sign a contract which is approved by the Labor Attaché. Never ever agree if your employer asks you for work without letting you sign a valid contract and a work visa
- Most of the time, domestic helpers that are victims of illegal recruitment personally know the recruiter. Since they haven’t paid anything, they will get convinced easily. They are sent abroad and a fake agency, something that is not registered at POLO, will have them. This agency will not look for an employer which will not let you sign a contract. For short, you will work illegally. That’s when your agony and problems will start to appear.
Filipinos who are aspiring to work abroad are advised to only transact on valid Philippine agencies to avoid these conflict situations.
