Hong Kong police frequently conduct a raid on alleged loan sharks. In line with that, Filipino domestic helpers whose passports were taken during these raids can get a replacement only if they go personally to the Department of Foreign Affairs office located in Manila.
This announcement was personally disclosed by Consul Paul Saret last January 20 when he was asked about the applicants being rejected at the DFA, according to The SUN.
“Ok na, the DFA has started issuing them new passports last week,” Consul Saret said.
Consul Saret, however, noted that applicants can only get their passports back at the Office of Consular Affairs (OCA) situated at the Mall of Asia, Roxas Boulevard.
After queuing on the said location, they will be asked to sign a declaration stating that they will never hock their passports again or else, it will be forfeited by the government and will be refused to get another travel document in future.
This rule will be applied even to OFWs coming from far areas of the Philippines.
“We’ll just advise them to fly to Manila first to apply for the passport, then pass by again on their way back to Hong Kong on the date of release,” says Consul Saret.
Just recently, a local man in North Point, Hong Kong was arrested by the police. There, they also took 300 Philippine passports. The man is a loan shark charging 125% interest rate in exchange of their passports as well as employment contracts.
