Former OFWs Leomer Lagradilla and wife Erika Joyce died during their honeymoon, only almost a month after their wedding last December 2018.
In a news reported via GMA’s 24 Oras, on January 9, 2019, the couple flew to their dream destination on the Island of Maldives for their honeymoon. Two days after, a tragedy happened.
According to the rescuers, Erika tried to save her husband Leomer from drowning while they were snorkeling in the waters of Dhiffushi Island in the Maldives. Unfortunately, Erika failed to save him and get drowned as well.
They were brought to a safe place by the rescuers who managed to get them off the water, but they were declared lifeless upon their arrival at the hospital.
Meanwhile, in the Facebook post of GMA News, many netizens were wondering why the couple gets drowned because the two should be wearing life vests before going into the water.
Some of them also commented that possibly, a jellyfish or an unknown water creature bit them and was the real cause of their death. Perhaps, the management of the resort opted to cover up the facts in order to protect their business and reputation.
With all the speculations, the authorities are looking closely into every detail of the story to be able to establish the real cause of their death.
Their families are still in great disbelief of what happened.
Erika Joyce and Leomer had been sweethearts since high school.
Both nurse, 30-year-old Erika worked as an OFW in Saudi Arabia while 29-year-old Leomer worked in Singapore. They had a long distance relationship for 10 years until they finally tied the knot and decided to start their journey as husband and wife last December 18, 2018.
The Department of Foreign Affairs through Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr. pledged to shoulder the cost of the repatriation of the couple worth P1.2Million. This was confirmed by Assistant DFA Secretary Elmer Cato in a separate interview with some reporters.
