An Indonesian domestic helper had to suffer the pain and agony of burned skin after her employer, a fellow Indonesian woman, poured hot water on her back.
Fortunately, the odds are still on her side when the court decided to send her to prison despite her old age.
Deputy District Court Judge C.H. Li gave one year imprisonment to Gee HooGiok, a 78-year-old woman who was found guilty in causing serious bodily harm to her domestic helper identified only as Ismaiti, 29-year-old.
The woman was also ordered to pay a total amount of $500 because she terminated the domestic helper just as she was having her sick leave.
“Why did you do this to me? I didn’t do it. I didn’t do it. Why do you have the heart to do this to me?” says Gee in front of the judge who handed her sentence.
The Indonesian helper was supposed to take care of Gee’s husband but he died just before she started her work in their household.
The unfortunate event was solely blamed on Ismaiti. Her employer thought that if she arrived earlier, her husband won’t die.
Ismaiti claimed that she tried her best to be patient with the elderly woman despite her constant bad mouthing. But on her third day of work, Gee poured hot water on her back. Her employer then brought her to the employment agency and terminated the contract.
Judge Li had to reduce the sentence of Gee to 12 months from the previous 15 months because of her old age.
